When People Don't Understand Your Calling

The Part We Don't Talk About

There are so many conversations about following your dreams.

People talk about taking the leap, starting the business, trusting God, and believing in yourself.

But there isn't nearly enough conversation about what happens when the people you love don't understand what you're doing.

If I'm honest...

That's been one of the hardest parts of this journey for me.

Not because strangers don't understand sound. I actually expect that. Sound is still unfamiliar to many people, and I'm always happy to answer questions or explain what I do.

What has been harder is realizing that not everyone close to me sees what I see.

And for a long time...

I let that affect me more than I'd like to admit.

Looking for Approval in the Wrong Places

I think, at some point, we've all done this.

We look toward the people whose opinions matter most, hoping they'll validate what we're building.

We hope they'll ask questions.

Celebrate with us.

Cheer us on.

And when they don't...

It's easy to start questioning ourselves.

"Maybe I'm not supposed to be doing this."

"Maybe this is silly."

"Maybe they're right."

I've had those thoughts.

But over the last few years, God has been gently reminding me that my calling was never meant to be sustained by someone else's approval.

It was always meant to be sustained by His.

Seeing the Support That Was Already There

Something else happened as I continued this journey.

I realized I had become so focused on who wasn't supporting me that I almost missed the people who were.

My mom has come to my sound sessions and continues to encourage me.

My stepmom has printed flyers because she believes in what I'm building.

And then there's my husband...

He might support me a little too much.

When I tell him I'd like another gong, another set of bowls, or that I've found another training I want to take, he doesn't even blink. He trusts me and encourages me to keep learning and growing.

After a day at the studio, he doesn't just ask, "How was your day?"

He asks thoughtful questions.

He wants to know what happened during the sessions, what I observed, what I learned, and how people responded.

He's even listened to my recordings, catching tiny changes most people would never notice, simply because he wants to help me become better at what I do.

Then there are my clients...

The ones who trust me enough to slow down, be present, and share their stories.

The ones who send messages afterward saying they finally slept through the night, felt a sense of peace, or experienced a moment of stillness they hadn't felt in years.

When I stopped to look around...

I realized God had surrounded me with support all along.

It just didn't always come from the people I expected.

God Doesn't Call Everyone to Understand

This has become one of the biggest lessons I've learned.

Not everyone is called to understand your calling.

Some people will celebrate it immediately.

Some people will quietly support you behind the scenes.

Some people may never understand it.

That doesn't make them bad people.

And it doesn't mean you're on the wrong path.

Sometimes God gives us a vision long before He gives other people the ability to see it.

Our responsibility isn't to convince everyone.

It's simply to be faithful with what He's placed in our hands.

If You're Feeling Discouraged..

Maybe your calling has nothing to do with sound.

Maybe it's writing.

Photography.

Teaching.

Starting a business.

Leading a Bible study.

Creating art.

Going back to school.

Or maybe it's simply becoming the person God has been inviting you to become.

Whatever it is...

Please don't stop because someone else doesn't understand.

People don't have to understand your purpose for it to be real.

If God has been faithful in opening doors, providing opportunities, and gently confirming your path, don't let someone else's opinion become louder than His voice.

A Final Thought

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's this:

Don't give up on what you love because someone else can't see the value in it.

Keep showing up.

Keep learning.

Keep serving.

Keep trusting.

The people who are meant to walk alongside you will.

The people who are meant to encourage you will.

And even in the moments when you feel unseen...

God sees every faithful step.

Sometimes, that's the only approval we need.
