Why Proper Training Is Essential in Sound Healing Sessions
I want to share something important that recently came up during my work — something that reminded me why safety, awareness, and individualized care are absolutely essential in sound healing.
A client signed up for a 1:1 session for January. As always, I reviewed their intake form as soon as it came in. I never skim these forms or treat them as paperwork — they are a meaningful part of holding safe space. They help me understand your needs, your body, your experiences, and anything that may affect how you receive sound.
As I looked through their form, I noticed they shared a history of seizures and epilepsy.
This is something I personally understand very deeply.
Certain frequencies can activate neurological responses. And if someone is prone to seizures, specific tones or vibratory patterns have the potential to evoke one. I know this because it has happened to me.
So I called them immediately.
We had an open and honest conversation. They were so grateful, they had no idea sound could interact with seizure activity or that certain instruments may overstimulate the nervous system.
Since they haven’t had an episode in over a year, we chose to begin gently with virtual sessions to see how their body responds before moving into in-person work.
And here’s why I’m sharing this story:
Sound is powerful — and absolutely not one-size-fits-all.
Your medical history matters.
Your safety will always come before anything else.
Conditions such as:
seizure disorders
vertigo
pregnancy
pacemakers
metal implants
a history of brain surgery
neurological sensitivities
…can all shift how your body receives vibration. Sound can be incredibly supportive in these situations, but only when approached with awareness, discernment, and proper care.
If your facilitator doesn’t know what is happening in your body, the vibrational field can overstimulate rather than soothe.
This is why I take my time.
I do not treat my sessions like a conveyor belt. I don’t line people up and play the same sequence of bowls.
Every single session is individualized and attuned to:
your nervous system
your energetic capacity
your medical background
your emotional landscape
your intention for the session
Sound is energetic.
It meets you where you are.
It responds to what your system can safely hold.
And like Trevor Hall says so beautifully:
“You can’t rush your healing.”
My role is to create a safe, grounded, nurturing space where your body can soften — not force an outcome, not overwhelm, not push past boundaries, but gently support the healing already inside you.
So if you ever book a session with me, know this:
Your intake form matters.
Your story matters.
Your safety matters.
And I will always take the time to honor all of it.
If you feel drawn to sound healing but aren’t sure how your body will respond, I’m here for you.
Reach out anytime, together we can discern the safest, most grounded way to begin.
